ChatGPT moves to stricter rules for younger users

OpenAI announced the ChatGPT for Teens experience, which will make ChatGPT more controlled for users between the ages of 13 and 17. This experience, which gathers existing security measures for young people under a single structure, also adds new protection and usage features. The system will automatically apply youth mode to users who indicate their age between 13-17. Accounts judged to be under 18 by OpenAI’s age estimation system will also be switched to the same experience. According to the company’s current age policy, children under the age of 13 are not allowed to use ChatGPT.

In its announcement published on Tuesday, OpenAI describes ChatGPT for Teens as an experience that will help young people learn, think critically, understand topics more deeply and use artificial intelligence safely. The timing of the announcement is also noteworthy; While the effects of artificial intelligence services on children and young people are increasingly discussed, technology companies are focusing more on age verification and protection systems specific to young people. The youth-oriented version of ChatGPT also makes content boundaries more clear amid these discussions. However, not all of the features announced by OpenAI were developed from scratch. The new experience brings together tools such as age estimation, parental controls and Study Mode, which were previously offered at different times, under the same roof and adds some new controls.

ChatGPT for Teens will enforce stricter content rules

Stricter restrictions on banned or sensitive content will be enabled by default on younger users’ accounts. Graphically violent material, depictions of self-harm, and sexual or romantic role-play scenarios will be more strictly restricted. When sensitive topics such as eating disorders come up, ChatGPT will show the user warnings and additional security-related information. Thus, when young people encounter such issues, it is aimed to be guided not only by the content filter but also by security information related to the subject. The system will follow a more restrictive structure according to the age group of young users, compared to the general security mechanisms found in adult accounts.

Controls offered to parents will also be a key component of ChatGPT for Teens. Parents will be able to set quiet hours to limit ChatGPT usage at certain times. When the system detects a possible security risk, a security notification can be sent to parents under certain conditions. OpenAI had previously added parental controls to ChatGPT; Therefore, this section is not a completely new feature, but rather the inclusion of existing tools in the youth-specific experience. However, having these controls work with default security measures in teen mode can reduce the need for families to explore individual settings.

OpenAI doesn’t just limit access to sensitive content, it also adds tools to understand how young people use ChatGPT. Additional reminders will be displayed when uploading sensitive images and a special onboarding process will be offered to young people. In addition, personalization tools such as accent colors and different sound options will also be available. The company had previously announced that it would show younger users more frequent break reminders. Thus, ChatGPT for Teens offers a structure that takes into account usage time and interaction habits as well as content security.

The new reminders developed for homework are one of the remarkable changes in education. According to the information provided by OpenAI, when the system detects that a young person is trying to complete the homework in a shortcut instead of learning, it will be able to direct the user to ChatGPT’s Study Mode feature instead of taking the user directly to the answer. Teenagers or their parents will be able to define specific “study hours” and Study Mode will automatically activate during these time periods. Since Study Mode was introduced about a year ago, the main innovation here is the closer integration of study mode with user-specific usage rules. How effective this approach will be in practice will depend on how accurately the system can detect situations where a student is trying to complete the assignment without shortcuts.

ChatGPT for Teens can therefore be considered a consolidation of existing teen user protections into a more distinct experience, rather than a completely separate and rebuilt version of ChatGPT. OpenAI launched its age estimation features in early 2026, and had previously introduced tools such as parental controls and Study Mode. The new package also includes smaller innovations such as responsible homework reminders, working hours and starter options tailored for young people. The introduction of age estimation ensures that protections for young people can be applied even if the user does not specify his or her age. However, the accuracy of automatic age estimation systems remains one of the defining points of this type of model in terms of user experience.

OpenAI states that protections for young people have been developed based on ongoing security research and will share more information about the findings in the future. The company also says it will continue to work on additional security features that will help young people benefit from artificial intelligence. The strength of ChatGPT for Teens is that it makes previously scattered options more consistent across teen users’ accounts, from parental controls to sensitive content restrictions to educational tools. On the other hand, the fact that a significant part of the announced features have been made available before is a point that should be taken into account when evaluating the scope of this experience. The effectiveness of the application will be more clearly understood with the accuracy of age estimation, appropriate operation of security warnings and the usefulness of educational guidance without unnecessarily restricting young people’s daily use of ChatGPT.
