Bluesky offers a solution to the fake account problem

While Bluesky is rapidly gaining popularity among decentralized social media platforms, it has made an important update in the field of security. The platform closed a security gap in the process where users authenticated with their domain names. Previously, once this verification process was completed, old usernames became available again. This led to problems such as creating fake accounts and impersonating users’ identities. Now Bluesky aims to prevent this problem by protecting old authenticated usernames.

The problem in question had become more evident, especially with the rapid growth of the platform. A study conducted by Cornell Tech revealed that 44 percent of the 100 most followed accounts on Bluesky were impersonated by a “doppelganger”, that is, a fake account. It has become inevitable for the platform to adopt stricter policies to combat such problems. As of November, parody, fan or humorous accounts were required to clearly identify themselves. Otherwise, these accounts may be suspended due to identity impersonation.

Strong measures against fake accounts from Bluesky

Bluesky has developed a more comprehensive approach to solving the fake account problem. Authentication processes are no longer performed only with users’ personal domain names; At the same time, old usernames are automatically preserved. This prevents malicious people from capturing these usernames and creating misleading profiles. In addition, attempts to create fake accounts or change identities are monitored more closely within the framework of the platform’s new moderation policies.

The update is not limited to the authentication system only. The “Mentions” feature added to Bluesky’s notifications tab allows users to easily find replies to their posts. In addition, a new button has been introduced that can change the order of the answers. This feature allows users to track their posts more regularly.

Bluesky’s authentication method involves a more technical process, unlike central social media platforms. Users can verify their accounts by adding a DNS record to their domain name. However, this method is not accessible to every user as it requires technical knowledge. Still, this system offers a more reliable solution compared to other verification methods.

These steps taken by Bluesky reflect the platform’s efforts to provide a safer experience to its growing user base. The platform, which draws attention with its decentralized structure, prioritizes the protection of user data and identity information. On the other hand, it seems that it will become clear over time what effect the fight against fake accounts will have in the long term.
