With the 3.3 version released on iOS, the Blackmagic Camera application gained Apple Watch support and began to offer more flexible use in mobile video production. This update, announced by Blackmagic Design, brings remote control and monitoring, especially for users who produce content alone. In addition, ATEM Mini integration has been expanded, paving the way for the iPhone to be used as a more functional camera in live broadcast scenarios.
Thanks to the newly added Apple Watch application, Blackmagic Camera on iPhone can be managed remotely. The system, which works via Wi-Fi connection, allows recording start and stop, as well as zoom control and changing various camera settings. Settings such as frame rate, shutter angle, white balance and ISO can be quickly adjusted via the watch. In addition, live images can also be viewed for framing control, however, the limited size of the Apple Watch screen creates certain limitations in terms of precise focus control.
This approach offers a practical solution, especially for users who shoot with an iPhone fixed on a tripod. Being able to control vlogs or single-person shooting without turning to the device provides significant convenience in daily use. The installation process is quite simple; When the Watch app is installed on iPhone, the devices are automatically paired and synchronized.
ATEM integration and professional control options expanded
Another notable aspect of the update is the improved integration with Blackmagic’s ATEM Mini video mixers. To benefit from this system, the Blackmagic Camera ProDock accessory is required. This hardware, priced at approximately $420, provides connections such as HDMI output, timecode and USB-C to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. When connected to ATEM Mini via ProDock with a single HDMI cable, camera settings can be changed remotely, recording can be triggered, and zoom and focus can be controlled.
In addition, DaVinci-based primary color correction tools are also integrated into the application. In this way, basic color adjustments can be made on the image during live broadcast and different visual tones can be obtained. In addition to all these, Focus and Zoom Demand control accessories developed by Blackmagic for broadcast cameras are now supported. Thanks to these physical control units connected to ProDock via USB-C, zoom and sharpness adjustments can be made without releasing the handles on the tripod.
The update is not limited to new features only. Stabilization support has been added for the ProRes RAW format. In addition, various bug fixes and performance improvements are also included in the package. Blackmagic Camera iOS 3.3 version can be downloaded for free from the App Store.
