Global AI glasses shipment in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year increased by 263 percent. Counterpoint Research data shows that 96 percent of the products sold are camera and audio-focused models that do not carry a screen. Meta is far ahead in this large subcategory with a 94 percent share.
Counterpoint’s research evaluates glasses without a screen, such as Ray-Ban Meta, in a separate class. These products can take photos and videos, process voice commands, and access artificial intelligence services on the connected phone. However, it does not bring notifications or images to the user.
The EssilorLuxottica partnership plays a decisive role in Meta’s superiority. Models using Ray-Ban design reduce the technological appearance while also reaching the widespread retail network. Additionally, the company expands its camera and voice assistant features with software updates. This structure makes it difficult for new manufacturers to compete on hardware features alone.
Screened augmented reality glasses, on the other hand, grew 449 percent on an annual basis, despite coming from a much smaller base. In this category, the optical system that reflects information in front of the eye, the battery and the processor must fit into the same body. Therefore, screened products continue to be more expensive, heavier and difficult to produce.
Screenless models are dragging the market for now
The glasses format provides more continuous camera and microphone access than a headset or phone. In addition, the user can take a photo, initiate a search, or request information about an object around him without using his hands. But that same constant access creates a need for more visible signs and clear rules about the privacy of people around.
Evaluating market data, 9to5Mac states that Apple’s preparation for this category may increase competition. However, for a new brand, besides camera quality, battery life, weight, prescription glass options and after-sales support are important.
The shipment figure may not be exactly the same as the number of products sold to the end user in the store. Research companies count devices that go from the manufacturer to the distribution channel as shipment; Products waiting in retail stocks can also be included in this total. Despite this, the 263 percent annual increase clearly demonstrates that manufacturers are distributing devices in much higher volumes than last year.
Application support will be decisive in the next phase of the market. Functions such as translating text seen by the glasses, providing information about an object, or taking notes during a call require strong connectivity and clear privacy indicators. Even if the hardware becomes lightweight, its daily use value may be limited without reliable software.
Although Counterpoint discloses total shipments by unit, the report shows that the market has not yet reached the scale of phones or wireless headsets. New models in the second half will determine whether Meta can maintain its 94 percent share and whether screen glasses can break out of the small base.
