The route followed by Apple for the iPhone Air series has been occupying the technology agenda again lately. According to information first reported by The Information, Apple has decided to postpone the iPhone Air 2 model indefinitely. In this claim, it was claimed that the main factor was that sales did not meet expectations. However, new information coming immediately after this statement suggested that the delay was actually a six-month shift and that the device would be introduced in spring 2027 instead of autumn 2026.
The latest information shared by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman provides a clearer picture of the status of the iPhone Air 2. According to Gurman, the second generation iPhone Air was not included in Apple’s short-term product roadmap in recent months. This statement invalidates comments that the delay was due to sales performance.
The priority for iPhone Air 2 will be the new generation processor, not the camera
According to The Information’s claims, one of the reasons for the delay was that Apple wanted to add a second rear camera to this model. However, Gurman states that Apple’s priority is not the camera, but the transition to a new generation 2-nanometer processor. This new A20 chipset will be produced with TSMC’s second-generation 2nm manufacturing process and will provide significant improvements in the battery life and overall performance of the iPhone Air. Reports from the supply chain also confirm that the development process of this processor is progressing.
Addressing the issue of the second camera, Gurman emphasizes that although it is technically possible for Apple to add an ultra-wide-angle camera, the camera area is already quite cramped in the current design. He points out that despite the limited user base of the iPhone Air, it would not make sense to make a major design change. It is only considered that if future foldable iPhone models come with dual cameras, this design may be reflected in the Air series.
It was also reported that when Apple was developing the iPhone Air, it expected this model to account for approximately 6% to 8% of new iPhone sales. This rate largely coincides with the performance of the iPhone 16 Plus model. These data provide an important indicator to understand the position of iPhone Air in the market.
According to the new report, Apple plans to introduce three high-end devices in the fall of 2026: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and a foldable iPhone model. Approximately six months after this launch, iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and possibly a renewed iPhone Air model will be introduced to users. According to Gurman, it is anticipated that Apple will continue this distribution model in the coming years.
In light of all this information, it is stated that the iPhone Air will not be an annually updated model, and therefore it has a name that is far from numbering, such as “iPhone 17 Air”. This approach shows that the model will develop with a more flexible schedule than the standard iPhone series.
In addition, Gurman reminds that the iPhone Air is not only a commercial product but also Apple’s technology testing bed. The foldable iPhone model that the company plans to introduce in 2026; It is stated that it will be largely inspired by the iPhone Air in terms of material quality, internal hardware components, miniaturization techniques and software optimizations. This indicates that the iPhone Air is considered an experimental platform in the Apple ecosystem.
The developments reveal that Apple is focusing not only on market dynamics but also on long-term technology transitions in its product planning. If the iPhone Air 2 is introduced in the spring of 2027, it is expected to serve as an important bridge in the company’s transition to a foldable device strategy.
