Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods model is in advanced testing stage

The camera-equipped AirPods model, which Apple has been working on for a long time, has entered a new phase in its development process. According to the information shared by Bloomberg, the company is very close to the final structure in terms of design and technical capabilities in the new AirPods prototypes, which have cameras on both headphones. The cameras in question will not be used for photography or video shooting in the classical sense. Instead, the device is intended to detect environmental data and provide visual context to Siri and Apple Intelligence-based artificial intelligence features.

According to the reported details, Apple plans to place low-resolution cameras on the right and left headphones. These cameras will analyze the user’s environment and provide data to various artificial intelligence processes. For example, when the user looks at the products on a supermarket shelf or the ingredients in the kitchen, he will be able to ask Siri what he can cook. The system will analyze visual data and offer suggestions. This approach offers an experience similar to the visual upload features in artificial intelligence services such as ChatGPT or the Visual Intelligence function on the iPhone.

It seems that the system developed by Apple will not be limited to object identification only. In addition, it is stated that the company also tested the cameras for different contextual operations. The headphones will be able to show reminders to the user based on the objects they detect in the environment or provide more detailed guidance by using visual signs during navigation. For example, the system will be able to describe the turning point not only with distance information, but also through a specific building or sign. This can provide a more natural experience, especially when using walking-oriented navigation.

Apple is turning to artificial intelligence-focused usage scenarios in the camera-equipped AirPods model

According to Bloomberg, the new AirPods model will be largely similar to the current AirPods Pro design. However, it is stated that the earphone stems will be slightly longer to accommodate the cameras. In addition, the device will also have a small LED light to indicate that visual data is transferred to the cloud. It is thought that Apple added this indicator to provide transparency to the user regarding privacy. Data security and user privacy have recently become a more sensitive issue for technology companies, especially in artificial intelligence-supported visual analysis features.

It is stated that the company has reached an advanced point in the product development process. According to the information in the news, Apple employees are currently actively testing prototypes in the DVT, or “Design Validation Testing” phase. During this process, the final version of the device’s design and hardware structure is verified. In the next stage, PVT, or “Production Validation Testing”, early production trials will begin. Apple usually completes mass production preparations for the product after this stage.

It is stated that Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods project has been developed in-house for about four years. In the initial planning, the product was planned to be introduced in the first half of 2026. However, the schedule was postponed due to delays in Apple’s new generation Siri infrastructure. It is considered that the company does not want to launch this product without making the developments on the Apple Intelligence side more mature.
