Apple has approved the UTM SE application, allowing it to run classic software and games on mobile devices. The application, which was rejected weeks ago and blocked from third-party app stores in the European Union, is now available for free download on iOS, iPadOS and visionOS platforms.
UTM SE, which was rejected by Apple in June, was reportedly given a “mediocre experience” by its developer, who said it would not retry the application. On Saturday, UTM thanked the AltStore team and another developer who played a critical role in this JIT-less (Just-In-Time) build with their QEMU TCTI implementation.
UTM SE: An emulator that brings users together with classic software and games
UTM SE is a PC emulator that allows users to run classic software and old-school games. However, like other emulators, UTM SE can’t do much out of the box. The app doesn’t come with operating systems, but it directs users to UTM’s website, which offers emulation guides for Windows XP to Windows 11, as well as pre-built virtual Linux machines. A screenshot from UTM SE’s App Store page also lists Mac OS 9.2.1 and DOS.
UTM SE’s App Store description text includes the following statements:
- A PC emulator that lets you run classic software and old school games.
- It supports both VGA mode for graphics and terminal mode for text-only operating systems.
- Emulates x86, PPC and RISC-V architectures.
- You can run pre-built machines or create your own configuration from scratch.
- It is built on QEMU, a powerful and widely used emulator.
Screenshots from UTM SE show users given the option to create a new virtual machine or download a previously created one. The app doesn’t include any virtual machines, but it does help you find them.
The arrival of UTM SE is seen as a big step, especially for users who are nostalgic about old games and software. This emulator allows users to experience software and games from the past on their mobile devices. Apple’s approval of this application was noted as a significant development in the technology world.
