Anthropic has started to implement the authentication process for its AI chatbot Claude in certain use cases. In the company’s statement, it is not clearly stated which situations this verification covers, but it is stated that users may be asked to verify their identities when accessing some features. As part of the process, a valid official identification document must be presented and a selfie taken via the device camera must be compared with this document.
While details about the scope of the app remain limited, Anthropic notes that the verification prompt will only appear when “accessing certain capabilities.” This approach aims to create an additional layer of security, especially when using functions that are considered advanced or sensitive. Despite this, a clear list of which features are included in this scope has not been shared.
Authentication app Claude sparks controversy among users
Following the announcement, various criticisms came to the fore in the user community. Many people question whether authentication is required to use an AI chatbot. The necessity of this additional step has become a matter of debate, especially for users who have already shared their credit card information in the paid subscription system. In addition, the third-party service provider preferred in the identity verification process is also at the center of criticism.
It is stated that Anthropic used the authentication service called Persona in this process. Persona is known as a company that has previously provided age and identity verification solutions to platforms such as OpenAI and Roblox. However, it is noteworthy that Founders Fund is among Persona’s investors. Peter Thiel, one of the founders of the investment company in question, is also among the founding partners of Palantir, known for its data analytics and surveillance technologies.
The presence of various government agencies such as the FBI, CIA and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Palantir’s customer portfolio is among the factors that determine the direction of criticism. Evaluations that the facial recognition and artificial intelligence-based analysis technologies offered by the company are used to expand public surveillance increase the sensitivity towards such collaborations.
Anthropic, on the other hand, shares some assurances about how user data is processed. According to the company’s statement, identity documents and selfies are processed directly by Persona and this data is not copied and stored. In addition, it is stated that the data is protected by encryption both during transfer and storage. Anthropic also emphasizes that the information obtained during the authentication process will not be used for training artificial intelligence models and will not be shared with third parties.
