Adobe, which has made revolutionary innovations in photo editing software, introduced a new artificial intelligence-based tool to users. This tool, called “Reflection Removal”, aims to remove unwanted reflections in photos taken especially through glass surfaces or shiny materials. The feature, which was first introduced at the Adobe Max 2023 event under the name “Project See Through”, is now available to Creative Cloud users with a preview version via the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in.
Photographs taken from glass display cases or similar reflective surfaces often face problems such as unwanted light reflections or self-image. This tool, developed by Adobe, can distinguish between the reflection and the main image using artificial intelligence. Thus, a clear and clean image is obtained, free from reflections, highlighting the main subject of the photo.
Photos are divided into pieces with the help of artificial intelligence
Adobe used a very detailed data set to train the artificial intelligence algorithm of this new tool. By combining thousands of reflection-free photos into pairs, engineers created millions of simulated reflection images. These images were then used to enable artificial intelligence to accurately detect the two separate elements that make up a composite image. Throughout the process, a recurring reward and punishment system was implemented to reduce the algorithm’s errors and increase its accuracy.
The tool can provide effective results, especially in wide reflections that cover the entire field of view. However, its performance may be limited on small or long distance reflections. For example, it may not be possible to clean reflections on natural surfaces such as wine glasses, car surfaces or lakes with this tool.
For users who want to experience the new tool, the process is quite simple. After activating the “New AI Settings and Features Panel” from the preferences menu of the Camera Raw plug-in, the tool is activated by restarting the application. Then, when a photo is uploaded, the Reflection Removal feature in the “Removing Distractions” section can be used.
The tests clearly reveal the vehicle’s capabilities and limitations. For example, a test conducted by Engadget examined reflections on Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses. The tool was able to make glasses lenses clearer and reveal some of the details in the background. However, it was seen that it could not completely eliminate the reflection. This shows that the algorithm still needs further development in certain scenarios.
Adobe has been making significant strides in integrating artificial intelligence into its creative tools in recent years. The generative rendering features the company offers with Firefly are one of the most notable examples of these efforts. In addition, this field is being expanded with the introduction of generative AI tools in the field of video content creation as of 2024. As an extension of this strategy, the Reflection Removal feature supports Adobe’s goal of providing faster and more practical solutions to its users.
This new tool offers an effective solution especially for photographers and creators. However, there are still some aspects that need improvement. Despite this, it is clear that such AI-powered innovations are transforming the creative industries. Such tools help users achieve more professional results while streamlining their business processes.
