To find out which processor and display technology your MacBook Pro has, first click on the Apple menu. About This Mac open the window. You can read the processor or chip name here, and verify whether the screen is OLED or mini LED from the official specifications of the exact model of the device. Just looking at the name “MacBook Pro” or the generation number of the chip is not enough.
This distinction is especially important when shopping second-hand, choosing accessories, and comparing different models that use the same chip family. Consider the seller’s product title as initial information. If possible, make the final check while the computer is on, using the model information displayed by the system. This way you won’t assume that two similar-looking cases use the same display or the same processor.
Check the exact name of the chip first
Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and About This Mac Turn on the option. On Apple Silicon models, the name of the chip is located in the line that appears as Chip or Chip, depending on the language and version. For Intel-based models, look at the Processor row. Apple explains how to distinguish these two groups in the Apple Silicon support document.
Make a complete note of the name here. For example, the “Pro” or “Max” suffix is part of the processor name, not to be confused with the word “Pro” in the computer’s MacBook Pro name. Also record the amount of memory. Treating chip name and memory as a single piece of information can lead to errors when comparing different hardware within the same family.
Finalize the model with System Information
option While holding down the key, open the Apple menu and System Information Click . Select the Hardware section on the left and read the model identifier and model number, if applicable. Apple’s model name and serial number guide shows where this information is located. Model identification and serial number are different information; Don’t use the two interchangeably.
Then look for the handle in Apple’s MacBook Pro model listing. Check the screen size, release year and chip family of the matching model together. The Specifications link for that record takes you to the document to verify the display. If a new model doesn’t yet appear on the list, use the official spec sheet for the exact product name rather than force-matching an old record.
Alternatively, you can open General and then About in System Settings. This way, which Apple describes in its system information guide, collects basic information and access to the system report in the same place. The appearance of the menus may vary depending on the macOS version, so focus on the name of the information you are looking for.
During the check, separate the personal name given to the computer from the model name of the product. The device name, which the user can change, does not identify the hardware. Copy the model ID verbatim when keeping records; Do not skip letters, numbers or commas. Also compare the individual storage and memory information in the sales ad. Such a short checklist reduces the risk of choosing the wrong configuration after finding the right model family and clarifies what details to ask the seller. If you’re comparing multiple devices, make separate notes for each computer; Be careful not to match the features of one listing with the screenshot of another.
Don’t remove display technology from chip name
Also review the Graphics/Displays section in System Information. If an external monitor is connected, do not confuse its information with the laptop’s built-in display. However, the resolution or display name seen here may not be enough to verify the panel technology alone. Make the final check in the Display section of the full model’s specifications.
In Apple’s current MacBook Pro comparison, PROLED XDR is defined by dual-layer OLED and touchscreen. On the Liquid Retina XDR side, there is mini LED technology. In the same comparison, the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are found in both display families. Therefore, just seeing the text “M5 Pro” does not prove that the computer has a touch OLED screen.
For a second-hand device, the model name, the exact name of the chip and the official technical description of the display must match. Cover serial number and personal information when sharing screenshots. If the computer does not turn on, the information on the packaging may provide a start; However, for devices with a history of repair or replacement, do not use the information on the box as the sole method of verification. Ask the seller to show the system information of the working device.
