YouTube opens image and GIF comments to all users in November

YouTube plans to open comments containing images and animated GIFs to all users in November 2026. The official API changelog confirms this schedule in the September 30 update. YouTube’s existing management tools, such as the option to pause comments, are also important for channel owners with the new comment format.

The document shows a new field for comment information that carries a link to the image or GIF. Thus, when the comment does not consist only of text, the address of the relevant image can also be forwarded to the applications. The November calendar shows the period when this support will reach all users, and YouTube does not say in the document which day of the month it will complete the distribution.

In addition, the technical description of the comment source states that the visual link is valid for six hours. This period represents the lifetime of the signed connection presented to the applications. It doesn’t mean that the comment was deleted after six hours or that the GIF disappeared from the bottom of the video. For developers using comment data, links need to be kept up to date.

On the other hand, the official API registration does not explain that every desired photo can be uploaded from the phone or that a specific GIF service will be used. Likewise, it is not clear from these documents how the menus on all devices will look. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between confirmed visual support and usage details that have not yet been disclosed.

Channel owners can use existing comment moderation options

YouTube’s help page lists basic options for those moderating the comment section. The channel owner can keep comments open, pause them or turn them off completely on a video. While comments are open, there are options for unmoderated publication, basic moderation, tighter moderation, or holding all comments for review. Additionally, there are tools to block certain words and hide users’ comments throughout the channel.

Basic and strict moderation puts potentially inappropriate comments in the review queue. YouTube also explains that these artificial intelligence-supported evaluations may not always give accurate results. In contrast, YouTube does not confirm a separate setting in the new announcement that only turns off GIF comments. The proliferation of visual comments may require channel owners to reconsider their current moderation choices.

Giving a visual reaction to a written response will change the form of interaction between viewers. However, the information that is finalized at this stage is that it plans to open to everyone in November. The fact that the support has not yet appeared on an account does not contradict the official calendar, the specified period for all users has not started yet.
