AMD plans to expand FSR 4 support to handheld consoles and gaming laptops by the end of 2026 plans to realize until. Jack Huynh, the company’s senior vice president, announced this goal during a meeting with the press in Seoul on October 7. While FSR 4 for Steam Machine is in the works, the new statement reveals AMD’s broader plan for devices using integrated graphics.
Huynh states that existing APUs and new products will be considered together. APU is the name used for products that combine processor cores and graphics unit on the same chip. This structure is important in portable gaming devices that cannot spare space for a separate graphics card.
In the conversation reported by The Elec, AMD executives say that they have developed a special lightweight FSR 4 model suitable for the APU environment. In this work, the company focuses on image quality and low latency. In addition, new APU products are expected to arrive at the end of the year.
On the other hand, the statement does not include a full list of supported handheld consoles or a driver release date. Therefore, it is not possible to say that every existing AMD-based device will definitely receive the update. The compatibility of a device available for purchase today with the plan for new products requires separate verification.
FSR offers image upscaling and frame generation with separate functions
AMD’s current FSR page calls the image upscaling function, which it previously introduced under the name FSR 4, as FSR Upscaling. This technology uses machine learning to produce higher quality images from frames rendered at lower resolution. The goal is to recreate detail without the game having to render each frame directly at the target resolution.
In addition, under the Redstone umbrella, there are different tools for frame generation, reconstructing ray tracing details, and learning light propagation. Frame generation adds new frames among the rendered frames. Upscaling, on the other hand, addresses the resolution and detail of the current frame; The two functions do not perform the same operation.
This distinction is important when evaluating the announcement for handheld consoles. The expansion of FSR support does not alone indicate that every function in the package will come to all devices at the same time. Additionally, AMD’s current desktop support chart does not replace the device list for the future portable version.
The main monitoring points for players will be the compatibility list, game support and distribution schedule to be announced by the manufacturer. Device-specific frame rate or battery time results were not shared during the meeting. Therefore, it would not be right to calculate how much profit the new version will bring to a particular handheld console.
The year-end target points to broader use of machine learning image upscaling on portable devices. The concrete decision point for existing device owners will be whether the support statement covers their own processor and device model.
