TikTok announced two new shopping features that will allow users to find products, get information about products and complete the purchase without leaving the application. The artificial intelligence-supported shopping assistant called Shopping Assistant, which the company has started to use, aims to help users in the product selection and purchasing process by communicating with users through natural language. In addition, TikTok has also prepared a new payment system where users can purchase the products they see in the For You stream directly from the relevant brand with a single touch. In this way, product discovery, question-answer process and payment steps are more tightly linked within the same application. TikTok’s new tools also show that the company will not limit its e-commerce activities only to TikTok Shop.
Shopping Assistant works more like a chat-based artificial intelligence system than a classic product search tool. According to TikTok, the assistant can understand the context of the conversation and remember the preferences or needs the user specified during the chat. The system can provide real-time information on product features, size options, stock status, delivery conditions and how to complete the purchase. Thus, the user can ask his questions within TikTok without having to go to another site or application for details about the product he saw in a video. This approach can help users, especially those who quickly discover products through short videos, complete the purchasing decision in fewer steps.
TikTok brings the shopping experience further to the For You feed
The new payment feature also focuses on reducing transitions in the shopping process. TikTok states that users will be able to purchase the products they come across in the For You stream, the main video area of the application shaped by the algorithm, from the relevant brand with a single click. While in the current structure users sometimes need to be directed to the brand site or another payment page, the new system aims to keep the purchasing process within TikTok. In addition, the combination of the chat-based assistant and the payment system in the same experience allows users to proceed to the ordering stage immediately after receiving information about the product. Especially on the social commerce side, where unplanned or quick purchasing decisions are common, such a short transaction chain can be an element that can increase transaction volume for TikTok.
TikTok does not develop new features alone. The company says that the system was created through work carried out with companies that provide e-commerce and payment infrastructure such as Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. These collaborations can make it easier for brands to connect their existing sales and payment infrastructures to the new experience within TikTok. However, how smoothly the solution will work will depend on how up-to-date the stock, cargo and product information of different sellers can be transferred. On the user side, the accuracy of the suggestions given by the artificial intelligence assistant and the extent to which it interprets product preferences will directly affect the quality of the shopping experience.
New tools also bring the TikTok Shop model, which TikTok has focused on e-commerce to date, to a broader structure. As the central shopping area within the application, TikTok Shop was the primary channel for the company’s e-commerce activities. The new approach aims to involve users in the shopping process from the content in the For You stream without having to go to TikTok Shop specifically. Thus, the product seen in a content creator’s video or a brand’s short video can turn into a direct shopping link. With this method, TikTok further reduces the boundary between content discovery and e-commerce, while also reducing the number of steps that direct the user to search engines, stores or artificial intelligence tools outside the application.
The company’s increased emphasis on shopping coincides with a period when the influence of TikTok videos on purchasing decisions is increasing. According to the Economic Impact Report data published by TikTok last week, activities on the platform are associated with a contribution of $81 billion to the gross domestic product for businesses in the United States. The same report states that 54 million Americans stated that they purchased a product after watching a TikTok video. While this data is based on the company’s own reporting, it provides a remarkable indication of how effective a channel TikTok has become for product discovery. The social network’s new shopping tools aim to keep this discovery behavior directly within the application until the payment stage.
TikTok Shop was launched in the USA in September 2023. The service reached nearly $15.8 billion in sales in the U.S. by 2025, accounting for nearly 18 percent of social commerce sales in the country, market research firm eMarketer estimates. The new shopping assistant and one-click payment feature turn other parts of the application into sales channels rather than replacing TikTok Shop. While AI-supported information delivery can answer users’ basic questions about the product faster, the direct payment flow shortens the purchasing process. However, the real success of the system will be determined by the accuracy of product information, the scope of seller integrations, and the extent to which users will trust artificial intelligence-supported shopping recommendations.
