Why doesn’t 1000 Mbps internet work at full speed?

Seeing a lower result in the speed test when using a 1000 Mbps internet package does not always mean a line fault. The way Wi-Fi 6 works distinguishes between the advertised speed of a wireless connection and the actual data rate; In home network solutions, the chain between devices is decisive.

First of all, it is normal for the measurement to remain below the theoretical 1000 Mbps value due to protocol loads on a 1 Gbit Ethernet connection. If any of the modem, router, switch, and computer ports are limited to 100 Mbps, the result drops even more sharply.

On the cable side, a solid Cat5e or Cat6 connection may be sufficient for gigabit speeds. A damaged lead, old interface or four-core cable may reduce the connection to 100 Mbps. The connection speed of the network adapter on the computer should be checked at this point.

In wireless connection, distance, walls, channel density and the number of antennas of the client device come into play. The total speed written on the router’s box is not the speed that a single phone will see under all conditions.

Speed test should be done from the right point

The first attempt should be made on a computer connected directly to the gigabit port with a short Ethernet cable. Background downloads should be turned off and multiple nearby test servers should be tried. So the problem can be isolated between the internet line and the home network.

In addition, the computer’s processor load, security software, browser and test server capacity affect the result. If the wired test remains consistently low, it is necessary to contact the service provider. If only Wi-Fi is low, router location and client properties should be examined first.
