Google Beam is available in six countries

It has long been a goal of major technology companies to make the other person appear as if they are actually sitting in front of you on the screen during video calls. Beam, developed by Google for this purpose, is moving into wider commercial distribution after limited screenings. The system’s hardware is now shipping to customers in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany and Japan, according to Google’s September 23 announcement.

The phrase “six countries” does not mean that the service is easily available everywhere. Google works with 18 channel partners for deployment and support. Hardware HP, HP Dimension with Google Beam provides by name. The company states that Meet and Zoom meetings can be used in this mechanism. Türkiye is not among these first shipping countries; A release date for our country has not been announced.

In HP’s technical explanation, the big screen, the camera system that tries to make eye contact more natural, and spatial sound stand out. Users do not need to wear headgear or special glasses. In this way, it is aimed to reduce the disconnection between looking at the camera and looking at the person on the screen in a classic video call. The price of the hardware and installation requirements were not shared in the new announcement.

Google does not promote this system as a general-purpose desktop video calling application. The examples the company gives focus on hiring interviews, executive meetings, and important conversations between remote teams. It is stated that Bain tested the system in candidate interviews, and Netflix and Capital Group were among the first customers. The scale of these samples or the number of uses at each customer was not disclosed.

What does Google’s internal research say?

In an eight-week study conducted among its own employees, Google states that teams using Beam feel 50 percent more connected to each other. Participants said it was 33 percent easier to ensure their feedback was understood; There was a 21 percent decrease in the need for additional meetings. These are findings from the company’s internal study. No independent evaluation was provided to show that the same results would be obtained at different institutions or that the difference was solely due to Beam.

To get more people to try the system, Google also made an agreement with shared workspace operator Industrious. Beginning in October, viewings with Beam equipment will be available to be booked at select venues in Atlanta, Chicago, New York and Palo Alto. This step can allow an organization to gain experience without installing an expensive and special equipment in its own office. However, location and price details should be checked separately for each location.

The real test for Google Beam will be in the transition from technology demonstration to regular use. A system that improves eye contact and voice direction cannot replicate all the conditions of a face-to-face conversation; It requires adequate room, connection quality and accessible hardware on both sides. Shipment in six countries will allow us to see to what extent these conditions will be met in real business environments.
