Amazon Leo, Amazon’s low-Earth orbit internet network, is expanding its service with local distribution partners in Uzbekistan. According to the statement of the Ministry of Digital Technologies of Uzbekistan, Uztelecom and its subsidiary UZ-SAT became the authorized distributor of Amazon Leo. The parties aim to provide connectivity especially in regions where it is difficult or expensive to establish terrestrial infrastructure. The deal doesn’t mean the service is immediately available to everyone in the country.
The official announcement states that the connection from the satellite will be used as a complement to existing fiber and mobile networks. In addition to remote settlements, hard-to-reach production and infrastructure facilities are also among the targets. Installing a new fiber line in such places requires time and investment; satellite connectivity provides a different means of distribution. On the other hand, the antenna, energy and local service arrangement still has to be established in the field.
Uztelecom says it provides connectivity to 96 percent of the country’s settlements and operates a 378,802 kilometer fiber network. This high coverage rate shows that the problem in the remaining regions cannot be measured only by the population rate. In mountainous or sparsely populated areas, even the connection of a small number of users can be important for access to education, healthcare and public services. Official figures are the company’s declaration; not independent coverage measurement.
Amazon Leo plans more than three thousand satellites in the first phase for its low-orbit satellite network. The company has different antennas called Nano, Pro and Ultra. Which terminal will be offered to homes and businesses in Uzbekistan, subscription fee, speed limit and data conditions were not disclosed in the announcement. Without this information, it is not possible to compare the service on price with existing mobile or fiber packages.
Satellite connectivity focuses on areas difficult to reach by terrestrial networks
The ministry states that the connection was launched at the company stand on the first day of ICT Week Uzbekistan 2026. This opening does not mean that the commercial distribution network has expanded throughout the country; shows the starting point. UZ-SAT is expected to create customer solutions and provide services within the country. Coverage map with calendar is necessary to understand the true pace of proliferation.
The practical value of satellite internet is especially evident in places where the terrestrial network is cut off or does not exist at all. However, latency, speed and continuity may depend on the antenna’s field of view and network density. It is not right to draw definitive conclusions about performance without Amazon Leo and Uztelecom publishing measurements from the field. The impact of the partnership on education or remote working will also be seen once real use begins.
There is also no Amazon Leo retail announcement for Türkiye. Although the contract in Uzbekistan attracts attention in terms of regional expansion, it does not confirm the regulation, sales or price decisions in our country. For now, the concrete development is that two local companies have been determined as authorized distributors and official steps have been taken to bring the service to difficult regions of the country.
