Samsung announced a special collaboration with Activision within the scope of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Under the agreement, Samsung will be the official TV, monitor, soundbar and Wi-Fi speaker partner of the game. While the collaboration particularly highlights the gaming features of the company’s display and audio products, it is planned to provide players with different experience opportunities before Modern Warfare 4 is officially launched. The new game of the Call of Duty series will also benefit from some technical features for wide-screen gaming products, especially Samsung’s Odyssey monitors. Chief among these are HDR10+ GAMING support and 32:9 super wide screen format.
The agreement between Samsung and Activision does not only cover televisions and monitors. Samsung’s soundbar and Wi-Fi speakers are also among the official hardware partners of Modern Warfare 4. In this way, the company gathers video, audio and connected game services under the same collaboration. Hun Lee, Senior Vice President of Samsung Electronics Visual Display Business Unit, stated that they are pleased to be the official TV, monitor, soundbar and Wi-Fi speaker partner of Modern Warfare 4. Lee said that they aim to offer players a more immersive experience with Samsung’s display and sound technologies, and that the company will continue to work with leading developers to improve gaming experiences in its display portfolio.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 will offer HDR10+ GAMING support
One of the notable points of the collaboration on the technical side will be HDR10+ GAMING support. Samsung and Call of Duty teams will integrate the technology in question into Modern Warfare 4. HDR10+ GAMING helps display colors and contrast more closely to the visual design of the game on supported displays. In this way, it is aimed to preserve details more clearly, especially in images where bright and dark areas are located in the same scene. However, in order to take full advantage of the technology, the screen used as well as the game must have HDR10+ GAMING support.
Activision Partnerships President Cody Neal also stated that Samsung’s display and game technologies offer a different experience for Modern Warfare 4. According to Neal, the work between the two companies will contribute to the display of the game’s images in terms of factors such as clarity, scale and responsiveness. These features become more visible especially in first-person shooter games where fast movements and short reaction times are decisive. However, the actual usage experience will depend not only on the display technology, but also on the performance of the hardware on which the game is run and the display settings used.
Another feature that will come with Modern Warfare 4 will be official support for the 32:9 super wide aspect ratio. This support particularly concerns gamers using super-wide monitors in Samsung’s Odyssey G9 family. The 32:9 format can provide a much larger display area on the horizontal axis compared to traditional 16:9 displays. Thus, it is possible for the player to follow his surroundings with a wider field of view in supported games. However, how the 32:9 format will be implemented in practice, how the user interface will be adapted to these resolutions, and how the field of view will be managed in different game modes will be clearer when Modern Warfare 4 is released.
Samsung also states that within the scope of the collaboration, it will offer users more options to experience Modern Warfare 4 via Samsung TVs, Odyssey monitors and connected game services. The company’s statement does not provide a detailed schedule on how all of these options will be implemented. Despite this, the announcement of HDR10+ GAMING and official 32:9 support shows that the partnership will not only be about using the products in marketing communications.
