Images thought to belong to the advanced mixed reality glasses developed by Meta under the code name Project Phoenix were found in the files of the HorizonOS Prescription Lens application. According to the findings reported by Android Authority, the device looks more like thick-framed glasses than traditional Quest headsets. Sensors can be seen around the temples, glasses-type pads on the nose, and a cable running from the left side to a separate processing unit. Since Meta has not yet announced the device, the images do not confirm the final design, sales name or specifications. However, the fact that the files are included in the company’s own lens application indicates that the project may be at a more advanced stage than prototype drawings.
Separate processing unit can reduce the weight of glasses
The images do not show the device face-on or on a user’s face. Therefore, it is not possible to make a definitive judgment about the width of the lenses, the actual thickness of the frame and the field of view. However, when viewed from the side, a significantly thinner structure is seen than the Quest Pro. Meta may aim to reduce facial pressure in long use by shifting some of the weight away from the head.
The QR code in the Prescription Lens app can be used to pair prescription lenses or initial setup with the device. This suggests that Meta has prepared Phoenix with an interchangeable lens option for people who wear glasses. On the other hand, an image in the application files does not necessarily mean that the product will be released to the consumer market. Hardware projects may change or be canceled during development.
The separate processing unit may allow the battery and high-heat generating components to be removed from the glasses. Thus, the head-mounted part becomes lighter and thinner cooling channels may be sufficient. In return, the user carries a second device in his pocket or belt and manages the cable connection. Apple Vision Pro’s external battery approach uses a similar weight trade-off.
Phoenix is expected to use eye and hand movements as its primary input method. Sensors around the handle can serve for environmental tracking, head movement, and controller-free interaction. However, the number of cameras, screen resolution and processor model are not yet known. This missing information also leaves it unclear whether the device is a standalone mixed reality headset or developer hardware connected to another system.
Meta Connect 2026 event will be held on September 23 and 24. The company gave tips about smart glasses, artificial intelligence updates and wearable products for the event. Therefore, it is possible that Phoenix will be featured at the event, but Meta has not confirmed such an announcement. Additionally, there may be a long time between prototype and retail release in terms of design and release schedule.
The most important detail that the leak reveals for now is that Meta is trying to bring high-performance mixed reality to a lighter form of glasses. The discrete processing unit may enable this goal, but the cable and second device may affect ease of use. Until the official statement comes, it is necessary to approach the claims regarding price, technical features and sales date with caution.
