Microsoft is preparing a built-in feature that will automatically switch between light and dark theme in Windows 11. New texts and system file found in experimental Windows Insider builds show that users will be able to schedule the theme for specific hours. The feature is not yet available as a stable setting that normal users can turn on.
The new options include the phrase “schedule automatic mode”. The system will be able to change the Windows theme with the application at specified start and end times. Other explanations in the code indicate that sunrise and sunset times can also be selected as triggers. When location permission is not used, the user will be able to set the hours manually.
Revealing the experimental details, the developers found a new component called Windows.Shell.AutoDarkMode.dll in the System32 folder. Windows Central’s review notes that the settings text is included in the final experimental build, but the interface is not complete. For this reason, Microsoft did not give an official distribution date for the feature.
Windows 11 today supports light and dark themes, but the user is forced to choose manually from the system setting. Those who want automatic switching turn to third-party applications such as Auto Dark Mode or the Light Switch tool in PowerToys. The built-in option will reduce this need and be able to manage battery, accessibility and application compatibility settings from a single center.
How will Windows 11 automatic dark mode work?
According to the leaked settings texts, the user will be able to define separate times for light and dark themes. When sunrise and sunset are selected, Windows will calculate the local time based on the location. While the system theme and application theme may change together, it may also be possible to choose different behaviors. It should be noted that these details may change before distribution, since Microsoft has not announced the final interface.
PowerToys currently performs a similar task with its Light Switch tool. The PowerToys method can switch according to time, sunrise or sunset and offers a keyboard shortcut. Even though the built-in Windows option contains fewer settings, it will reach a larger group of users who do not want to install additional programs.
Microsoft does not carry every feature in experimental channels to the stable version. Therefore, it is not recommended for users to forcibly open the component by making registry changes. However, the simultaneous appearance of the system file and a large number of interface texts shows that the work has passed the stage of a simple idea. This change, which seems small in daily use, can complete one of the long-standing missing points of Windows 11 in terms of screen brightness and comfort in night use.
Automatic theming can reduce eye strain, especially for those who work on the same computer throughout the day. However, the dark interface may not be more comfortable in all environments, and some applications may not follow system preference correctly. It is unknown whether Microsoft will offer app exceptions in the final release. Insider tests will reveal details like redrawing of open windows and taskbar consistency during color transition.
