Huawei introduced the new model of its tri-foldable phone series, Mate XT 2 Extraordinary Master, at the HarmonyOS 7 event. The phone, whose details such as a more durable hinge and larger battery have previously been the subject of various leaks, differs from its predecessor with its new Kirin 9050 Pro processor and hardware-based privacy screen called Lingdun. When fully opened, the Mate XT 2 offers a large 10.2-inch working area, and when folded, it transforms into a more traditional smartphone shape. Huawei has also made changes to the screen and hinge structure aiming to increase durability. The price of the phone, which is offered in China starting from 19,999 yuan, goes up to 29,999 yuan in the highest capacity option.
While the Mate XT 2 has a thickness of 12.3 mm when folded, when fully opened, the thickness drops to 3.5 mm. The 10.2-inch screen on the inside offers 3K resolution and 12.8:9 aspect ratio. The 6.5-inch external screen used when the phone is folded has a resolution of 2442 x 1140 pixels and a peak brightness of 6500 nits. Thanks to this structure, the device can switch from standard phone use to a large tablet-like workspace. HarmonyOS 7 also offers multitasking options such as running three applications side by side and a PC-like workspace to take advantage of the three-piece screen structure.
One of the notable features of the Mate XT 2 is the Lingdun privacy screen. Huawei describes this as the first hardware-level privacy system built directly into a foldable display. Benefiting from an independent dual pixel layout, the system can narrow the viewing angle of the screen by double-tapping the external screen or pressing the smart control key. In this way, while the screen continues to be visible from the front, it becomes difficult for people on the side to see the content. Users can also physically close both sides of the screen by placing the external display panels in an upright position.

At the heart of the phone is the Kirin 9050 Pro, of which Huawei pointed out some of its features before the introduction. According to the values provided by the company, the new processor increases overall performance by 42 percent compared to Mate XTs. While the increase in single-core performance is announced as 24 percent, this rate increases to 52 percent in multi-core. On the Ma Liang GPU side, real-time ray tracing support over 50 million lines is mentioned, and it is stated that the graphics rendering performance has increased by 142 percent. Da Vinci NPU, on the other hand, supports a mixture of experts working on the device, with a total of 30 billion parameters and 2 billion active parameters.

According to the information provided by Huawei, the lags experienced in video calls on high-speed trains have been reduced by 25 percent compared to the previous model. Mate XT 2 can also perform ECG analysis and has received Class II medical device certification from regulatory authorities in China. On the hardware side, Huawei seems to focus on connectivity and health features as well as processor performance.
The hinge and screen structure have also been revised in the new model. The Mate XT 2 has IP58 and IP59 dust and water resistance ratings, and Huawei states that this is the first trifold phone to offer this level of protection. The outer screen is protected by basalt glass; The company claims that this material provides 30 times greater resistance to drops and 16 times greater resistance to scratches compared to the previous generation. It is stated that the multi-layer composite structure used in the interior screen increases the resistance to impacts by 200 percent. Since these are laboratory values announced by Huawei, independent durability tests will be more revealing to evaluate the long-term daily use performance of the complex tri-fold display and hinge system.
The camera system includes a main camera with a 50 megapixel RYYB sensor. This camera, which is stated to offer 18EV ultra-high dynamic range, has an aperture that can vary between F1.49 and F4.0. The main camera is accompanied by a 50-megapixel RYYB periscope telephoto camera with 3.5 times optical zoom and a 40-megapixel RYYB ultra-wide-angle camera. In addition, Huawei’s third generation Red Maple color camera is also included in the system. The company states that this camera improves color accuracy by 95 percent compared to the previous generation.
Mate XT 2 is also the first Huawei phone to come with HarmonyOS 7. The software’s split-screen layouts, prepared for the tri-foldable display, allow three applications to be used side by side at the same time. The PC-style workspace also aims to use the 10.2-inch screen more efficiently, especially in productivity applications. One of the most obvious advantages of the trifold design is not only the larger display area, but also the opportunity to work with more than one application at the same time. However, the fact that this design requires a more complex hinge and screen system compared to standard foldable phones is among the points that should be taken into consideration in terms of durability and long-term use.
The phone comes in three color options: Black, White and Purple. All three models feature a star-diamond shaped camera module, a gold woven brocade pattern on the body, and an Extraordinary badge near the hinge. Huawei thus emphasizes the upper-class position of the series with material and design details. However, the prices of the Mate XT 2 make the device one of the expensive options in the foldable phone market. The price increases significantly, especially when Lingdun screen and high storage capacity are preferred.
According to Chinese prices, 19,999 yuan is requested for the Mate XT 2 with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. The 512 GB storage version carries a price of 21,999 yuan, and the 1 TB version carries a price of 23,999 yuan. The price of the 1 TB model with Lingdun privacy screen rises to 24,999 yuan, while the top option combining 16 GB RAM and 2 TB storage with a pen set reaches 29,999 yuan. While Huawei gives buyers a rotating stand case worth 499 yuan for free, it sells the M-Pen 3 Mini pen separately for 1,199 yuan. Mate XT 2 improves the tri-foldable phone approach of the first model with its more durable body structure, wide multitasking possibilities and hardware-based privacy feature; On the other hand, its high price and complex structure show that the device will appeal to users who specifically want the large screen area offered by this form factor, rather than the masses.
