Poco has officially announced the processors that will be used by the Poco F9 Pro and F9 Ultra, which will be introduced on September 1. According to the information provided by the company, the top model of the series, Poco F9 Ultra, will come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Poco F9 Pro will feature the version of the same processor family called Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V-series. Thus, the processor of the F9 Ultra, which was previously seen in the Geekbench 7 results, was directly confirmed by Poco. Although the two models share the same processor family, the differences, especially in the graphics unit, show that the performance will not be the same in games and intensive graphics loads.
The choice for Poco F9 Ultra does not bring any significant changes on the processor side compared to the previous generation. Poco F8 Ultra also used Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and the company maintains the same platform in the new model. Therefore, it would not be right to expect the performance increase of F9 Ultra to come only from the processor. Factors such as cooling system, memory configuration, software optimizations and power limits may become more decisive in actual usage performance. On the other hand, the choice of Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V-series in the Poco F9 Pro seems more remarkable considering previous expectations.
Poco F9 Pro comes with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V-series
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V-series uses the same CPU architecture as the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Despite this, there are significant hardware differences on the graphics side of the two chipsets. The GPU in the V-series version is 33 percent smaller than the graphics unit in the standard model and has eight computing units instead of 12. The amount of on-chip memory allocated for the GPU also decreases from 18 MB to 12 MB. For this reason, although it is possible for the two processors to give similar results in CPU-intensive applications, F9 Ultra can be expected to provide an advantage in long-term gaming loads and applications that strain graphics performance.
The flagship processor of 2024, Snapdragon 8 Elite, was used in Poco F8 Pro. For this reason, there was a possibility that the F9 Pro could switch to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 platform, which does not carry the Elite tag. Poco has chosen the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V-series instead. Although the CPU cores of the V-series processor share the same basis as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, they run at higher clock speeds. The performance of the graphics units is expected to be closer to each other. This table shows that the F9 Pro will receive a more significant update in terms of processor compared to the previous model, while the difference between the generations in the F9 Ultra will be created through other hardware components.
There are other models that give an idea about the hardware of the F9 family. The Chinese market-exclusive Redmi K100 Pro and Redmi K100 Pro Max underpin the global market counterparts of the Poco F9 Pro and Poco F9 Ultra, respectively. Xiaomi and Poco had previously brought some performance-oriented phones, which they offered in China under the Redmi brand, to international markets under the Poco name with certain hardware or design changes. Therefore, the screen, camera, battery and charging features of the Redmi K100 series can give strong clues about the F9 models. However, it is possible to change memory options, software details or some hardware components in global models, so we should not assume that all features will be exactly the same.
The official launch of the Poco F9 series will be held on September 1. For now, the company has shown the processors as well as the color options that will be highlighted for the two phones. Aurora Green color will be used for Poco F9 Pro and Dark Cherry color will be used for F9 Ultra. In light of the announced processors, the Pro model offers more changes in terms of performance updates between generations, while the Ultra model keeps the processor power at the current level. The extent to which the phones will differ from each other will be determined by features such as screen, camera system, battery capacity, charging technology and price, the details of which have not yet been disclosed.
