Shopify data shows why AI works differently in e-commerce

The company stated that artificial intelligence-supported search traffic was also effective in the revenue performance that exceeded expectations. The financial results announced by Shopify also contain figures that support this growth. The company’s second quarter revenue increased by 36 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching $3.6 billion. Analysts’ expectation was at 3.4 billion dollars. Gross operating profit also rose 31 percent to $1.71 billion, beating market estimates of $1.63 billion.

Artificial intelligence offers more accurate results in product discovery

Finkelstein stated that artificial intelligence-supported search systems work differently than classical search engines. Stating that traditional search engines mostly rank results according to the popularity of certain keywords, the manager stated that artificial intelligence systems try to understand the real needs of the user by using structured data in the Shopify product catalog. He stated that thus, more appropriate results can be produced not only according to word matches, but also according to the usage scenario of the product and different criteria.

According to Finkelstein, while traditional search engines largely focus on the keyword “child seat”, artificial intelligence-supported systems evaluate different variables such as vehicle type, seat dimensions and the placement of three seats at the same time. As a result, products that are more suitable for users’ needs are recommended and the likelihood of purchasing increases.

The company stated that there was a significant change in the shopping process. According to shared data, approximately half of the users directed by artificial intelligence tools directly access the product detail page. This rate is 2.5 times higher than traditional search traffic. Directing users directly to pages closer to the purchasing stage is considered one of the important factors that increase conversion rates for stores.

In addition, it was announced that 75 percent of artificial intelligence-driven purchases in the second quarter were made outside Shopify’s top 100 product categories. The company thinks this is a remarkable development, especially for small businesses selling niche products.
