While announcing its financial results for the second quarter of 2026, Google also shared remarkable data about its growth in artificial intelligence. According to the company’s statement, Gemini reached over 950 million monthly users. Thus, Google’s artificial intelligence assistant is very close to joining the company’s products with more than a billion users, such as Search, Gmail, YouTube, Chrome, Android and Drive. The announced figures reveal that Gemini has significantly expanded its user base in the last year.
Google stated that Gemini’s monthly user count tripled compared to the same period last year. The company announced in February that the Gemini application exceeded 750 million monthly active users. The growth achieved in the past few months shows that Google’s investments in artificial intelligence continue to be rewarded on the user side. At the same time, Gemini has become closer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT service in terms of monthly active users. OpenAI announced in June that ChatGPT had reached one billion monthly active users.
Gemini continues to grow with new features
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in his statement at the investor meeting that users are especially interested in artificial intelligence agent capabilities. Pichai stated that features such as Daily Brief and personalized digital assistant Gemini Spark received positive feedback. It was stated that Gemini Spark, which was first available in the USA, was made available in international markets over time, and it was emphasized that Google continues to deliver new artificial intelligence features to users at a high development pace.
Gemini’s growth is not limited to the Android ecosystem. Google’s efforts for iPhone users also seem to have expanded the reach of the application. It is stated that the interest on the iOS side has increased, especially after the launch of the rendering model called Nano Banana. According to data from application analysis company Appfigures, the Gemini application has been downloaded more than 137 million times on the iOS platform in the last 12 months. This table shows that Google has managed to create a strong user base in the Apple ecosystem.
In addition, the State of AI report published by market research company Sensor Tower also points out that competition has begun to change direction. According to the report covering the first six months of 2026, ChatGPT’s market share among artificial intelligence assistants fell below 50 percent for the first time. In the same period, Gemini’s share increased to 27.7 percent. These data reveal that competition in the artificial intelligence assistant market is moving towards a more balanced structure.
On the other hand, Google also emphasized that artificial intelligence investments do not negatively affect the search engine. It was announced that the company’s question-answer-focused AI Mode experience reached more than one billion users this quarter. While Google stated that this artificial intelligence-supported experience provided an additional increase in search queries, it also stated that although new models and features were added, it reduced the operating costs of artificial intelligence services thanks to hardware and infrastructure optimizations.
Gemini’s rapid rise in users shows that Google’s approach to developing generative AI not just as a standalone application but integrated with its Search, Android and other services is starting to pay off. Despite this, competition with ChatGPT is expected to become more intense in the coming period through new features, user experience and platform integrations. Current data reveals that Google is closer than ever to reaching the billion user threshold in the artificial intelligence ecosystem.
