The first information about the Galaxy S27 series, which Samsung is expected to introduce in the first months of 2027, has begun to emerge. According to a new leak, the company is testing a new 50-megapixel sensor developed by Sony in the main camera of the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus models, instead of the ISOCELL sensors it has been using for a long time. If the claim turns out to be true, Samsung will have included a Sony-signed sensor in the main camera of the standard Galaxy S models for the first time after the Galaxy S21 series.
According to the information shared by Galaxy Club, both Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus prototypes are being tested with a 50-megapixel main camera sensor produced by Sony. After the 12-megapixel Sony IMX555 sensor used in the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Plus models, Samsung turned to ISOCELL sensors that it developed entirely in its flagship phones. Therefore, the new claim shows that the company is re-evaluating different options regarding camera hardware.
Limited changes are expected on the camera side in the Galaxy S27 series
According to the leak, the most striking innovation in the camera system can only occur in the main sensor. It is stated that the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus models will retain the 12 megapixel ultra wide-angle camera found in the Galaxy S26 family. It is not yet known whether there will be any changes on the telephoto camera side. Samsung has not made an official statement regarding these claims.
It is known that Samsung has long preferred its own ISOCELL image sensors in its smartphones. Therefore, testing the Sony sensor during the development process does not necessarily mean that the hardware in question will be used in the final product. However, the company’s re-evaluation of solutions from external suppliers years later reveals that different alternatives to improve camera performance are on the table.
On the other hand, Sony continues its investments in mobile imaging. The company recently announced the LYT-901 sensor with a resolution of 200 megapixels, targeting especially high-end smartphones. Different claims that emerged before suggested that Samsung considered using this sensor in the Galaxy S27 Ultra model, but abandoned this idea due to the high cost and preferred the ISOCELL solution.
If a Sony sensor is preferred for the main camera, how this will affect the image quality will depend on many factors such as the physical size of the sensor, pixel structure, image processing algorithms and Samsung’s software optimizations. Today, not only the sensor but also the manufacturer’s computational photography approach in smartphone cameras are among the key factors that determine the final image quality. Therefore, changing the sensor manufacturer alone may not mean a better or worse camera experience.
Since the launch of the Galaxy S27 series is still a long time away, the available information is based only on tests during the development phase. As the production process progresses, it seems possible that Samsung will make different hardware choices or make new changes to the camera system. Therefore, the accuracy of the claims about the Sony sensor will become clear with the company’s official announcement or reliable new leaks.
