Remarkable move for xAI: Elon Musk quietly purchased APR Energy

Earlier this year, Elon Musk acquired APR Energy, which develops mobile gas and diesel turbine systems. While the acquisition was completed without public announcement in May, neither Musk nor APR Energy made an official statement. The development was revealed by reviewing company records. According to information provided by Electrek, the acquisition is estimated to be worth approximately $1 billion.

APR Energy develops portable energy production systems for use in regions where electrical infrastructure is inadequate or in projects where temporary energy is needed. The company’s turbines, which run on gas and diesel fuel, can be mounted on trailers and put into operation in a short time. This structure offers a flexible solution, especially for data centers, emergency operations and industrial facilities with high electricity consumption. APR Energy has previously operated in public institutions and private sector projects in different parts of the world.

xAI data centers may be the focus of APR Energy acquisition

The most likely use of the acquisition is considered to be data centers operated by Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI. Training and running large language models requires high processing power as well as a significant amount of electricity consumption. For this reason, technology companies have recently been turning to different solutions to secure energy supply. Mobile turbine systems also attract attention because they can quickly create additional capacity in cases where the electricity grid is insufficient.

It is stated that the mobile turbine fleet developed by APR Energy has similar features to the systems used in xAI’s data center in Southaven, Mississippi. The data center in question came to the fore with a lawsuit filed alleging that the US Clean Air Act was violated due to the use of mobile gas turbines. It is also claimed that the number of mobile turbines used in the facility increased significantly after the preparation of the case file. Despite this, it is stated that the US Department of Justice requested the case be dismissed so that the American army can continue to use the Grok artificial intelligence system in its operations.

Musk’s purchase of APR Energy reveals a remarkable picture when compared to his statements in previous years. Musk, who stands out with his investments in Tesla and sustainable energy, described the continued use of fossil fuels as “by far the biggest wrong experiment in history” about ten years ago. However, the latest acquisition points to a different direction in that it directly includes energy systems using natural gas and diesel fuel in its business portfolio.

In addition, news that Musk is working on plans to build a natural gas pipeline in Texas has also come to the fore recently. The rapid growth of artificial intelligence infrastructures places not only processor and server investments, but also investments in energy production and distribution among the priorities of technology companies. It seems possible that the APR Energy acquisition can also be evaluated in this context. However, there is no official statement yet about the scale at which the company will use this technology and how the acquisition will be reflected in long-term plans. Therefore, the effects of the transaction will emerge more clearly with xAI’s infrastructure investments and energy projects in the coming period.
