A new Xbox controller focused on cloud gaming is coming from Microsoft

The new Xbox Cloud Gaming controller, which Microsoft has not yet officially announced, was revealed with images leaked to the internet. Photos shared by Brazilian publication Tecnoblog show that the company is working on a more compact accessory for cloud gaming experience. The design of the device, which draws attention with its small dimensions, resembles the portable controller models of the 8BitDo brand at first glance. Despite this, details such as the directional key and the Xbox home button reveal that Microsoft has preserved the classic Xbox design line. The presence of two different color options, black and white, in the images indicates that the product may have passed the prototype stage.

According to the information shared by The Verge, the controller in question is developed directly by Microsoft. It is stated that the device has a near-rectangular body structure, short grips and asymmetrical analog stick placement. In addition, preserving the standard Xbox key sequence can make it easier for existing Xbox users to switch to the cloud gaming side without changing the control structure they are used to. Its compact body structure can provide portability advantages, especially for use with mobile devices. On the other hand, it is not yet known how the device will perform in terms of ergonomics despite its small size.

One of the notable details is that Microsoft emphasizes Wi-Fi connection instead of Bluetooth in this product. Allegedly, the controller can be connected directly to Microsoft’s cloud gaming services. Thus, it is aimed to reduce the connection delay caused by Bluetooth. Since low latency is critical in cloud gaming services, a direct Wi-Fi connection can positively impact the user experience. Despite this, the fact that the device can also work via Bluetooth if necessary will provide flexibility in terms of compatibility with different platforms.

Xbox Cloud Gaming experience aims for low latency

In recent years, connection technologies have become more important in the field of cloud gaming. In particular, services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce Now and Amazon Luna try to minimize controller latency as they offer real-time game streaming over the internet. The Wi-Fi-based structure preferred in Microsoft’s new controller can also be considered an extension of this approach. A similar system was previously used in the Google Stadia controller. Despite the closure of Stadia, its controller approach, which provides a direct server connection, was technically welcomed within the industry.

In addition to all this, it is noteworthy that the device uses an internal rechargeable battery. The fact that Xbox controllers continue to support AA batteries for many years has been a frequent topic of discussion among users. The new leak shows that Microsoft may have turned to a more modern power solution. In the reviews made by Digital Foundry, it is stated that the controller uses a chipset produced by Realtek and has a dual-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor. This technical structure suggests that the device can undertake not only basic login operations but also more advanced tasks such as network connection management.

Microsoft has not officially introduced the device yet. For this reason, there is no definitive information about the product’s sales date, price or which platforms it will be compatible with. Still, the leaks show that the company continues its hardware investments on the Xbox Cloud Gaming side. It is not a surprise that such a controller is available to users, especially in a period when portable gaming devices and cloud-based services attract more attention. The possibility of an official announcement being made in the coming period has gained strength.
