Video sharing on YouTube mobile is changing radically

YouTube is introducing a change that directly affects the video sharing experience through the mobile application. Users will now be able to share a video to start from a specific point in time. While this innovation enables faster transfer of the sections that need attention, especially in long videos, it comes with the removal of the previously offered Clips feature.

Thanks to this new option offered in the mobile application, users will be able to share links started directly from a certain second instead of sending an entire video. Thus, while content recommendations become more targeted, the viewer will not have to manually fast-forward the video to reach the relevant section. This offers a practical use, especially in content such as training videos, reviews or long broadcast replays.

YouTube Clips feature is being retired

However, YouTube is gradually disabling the Clips feature it previously introduced. This feature, introduced in 2021, allowed users to create short clips by cutting certain parts of videos and share them via a separate link. With the new regulation, options such as setting an end time or adding a custom description will no longer be offered while sharing.

While the company states that existing Clips content can continue to be watched, it states that there will be no opportunity to create new clips in the future. Despite this, YouTube recognizes that creating clips is still an important method of discovery for creators. However, the company points out that third-party applications and authorized content creator programs that offer advanced cropping tools can meet this need on different platforms.

On the other hand, this change can be considered as an extension of YouTube’s approach to simplifying the mobile experience. While focusing on a single sharing method provides a more understandable use, especially for ordinary users, it eliminates some flexibility for content creators. Despite this, the timestamped sharing option stands out as a solution that responds to the need for fast and direct content redirection.

In addition to all this, considering YouTube’s recent emphasis on formats such as Shorts and live broadcasts, it does not seem surprising that the Clips feature remains in the background. While the new sharing approach offers a simpler but functional use, it directs users who want detailed editing to different tools. While this change provides practicality for everyday users, it increases the importance of alternative solutions for more advanced content clipping needs.
