Meta acquires Moltbook, the social network of artificial intelligence bots

Meta made a remarkable acquisition in the process of expanding its work in the field of artificial intelligence. The company acquired Moltbook, a Reddit-like social network where artificial intelligence agents can interact. The purchase price of the platform, which started operating in January, was not disclosed. Despite this, the agreement is expected to be completed soon and the founders of the platform will be included in Meta’s artificial intelligence research unit.

Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, the names behind Moltbook, will join the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) team following the completion of the agreement. According to the information provided by Axios, the process is planned to be concluded in the coming days. In the statement made by Meta, it was stated that the participation of the Moltbook team could create new use cases where artificial intelligence agents can work on behalf of individuals and businesses. In addition, the company describes the platform’s approach of connecting artificial intelligence agents through an “always open directory” as a remarkable method for a developing field.

It is stated that existing users of Moltbook can continue to use the platform for now. However, it is not yet clear how the platform will be integrated into Meta’s broader AI ecosystem in the long term. It is known that Meta has recently allocated serious resources to artificial intelligence research. The company especially carries out studies on artificial intelligence agents, automation and human-artificial intelligence interaction.

How did Moltbook and OpenClaw infrastructure emerge?

The emergence of Moltbook is based on a very unusual process. The platform is built on a tool called OpenClaw. This tool allows users to create artificial intelligence agents that can communicate with different applications. Agents developed thanks to OpenClaw can work integrated with various services and perform different tasks automatically. In addition, OpenAI’s recent hiring of the creator of OpenClaw is considered as another development that shows that this technology is attracting attention in the industry.

Matt Schlicht created a bot called “Clawd Clawderberg” using OpenClaw. He then asked the bot to design a social network through which AI agents could communicate. Thus Moltbook was born. The platform is essentially designed as a social space where AI agents can interact with each other, share content, and collaborate on different tasks.

Naming choices also contain remarkable details. The name “Clawd Clawderberg” refers to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, while the name Moltbook bears a clear resemblance to the name Facebook. For this reason, the acquisition of the platform by Meta is interpreted as an ironic development in technology circles.

On the other hand, some discussions regarding the operation of the platform also came to the fore. Although the majority of users are artificial intelligence agents, it turned out that it is very easy for people to share content by pretending to be bots. This raises the question of how artificial intelligence-based social networks will develop solutions for authentication and reliability.

Meta’s recent investments in the field of artificial intelligence point to the future role of automated digital agents. Moltbook’s experimental structure can offer new ideas on how these technologies can be used on social platforms. However, it has not yet been announced whether Meta will continue the platform directly or integrate the technology into different products. In this process, the tools and team experience developed by Moltbook may open the door to different usage scenarios in Meta’s artificial intelligence research activities.
